Negin Painting Method
The clay is initially fired in a kiln at approx 800C, then the master potter draws a unique design on the clay. After selecting the background colour, several layers of different coloured glaze are used to fill in the initial design. The clay is fired for a second time at approx 1000C. The final process involves clear glazing which fixes the design then the clay is fired for a third time and final time. This creates the textured feel, look and vibrant lustre of the final clay. Each piece is unique and signed by the master potter.
General history of Hamadan pottery
The Hamadan region has a long, rich and continuous history of pottery spanning over 7 millenia, reaching back to the early Neolithic period. The early earthenware was simple and consisted of either black or red utensils, then around 4000 years ago geometric patterns were used to decorate the pottery. Excavations in recent years at Ecbatana Hill, Gyan in Nahavand and Nushijan in Malayer Hamadan Province, evidence the continual development of the skills of these ancient artisans.
Progress in the technology of the kiln and better temperature control enabled the master potter to develop more elaborate colourful designs and glazing techniques. The invention of the potters wheel allowed the artisan to produce more symmetrical and better quality pottery. Indeed Iran can be said to be the birthplace of the skill and knowledge of producing decorative pottery and earthenware.
